Noticeable Tweaks To The Game Plan
Forest started the game allowing Tottenham to build up from the back in the first phase almost completely unopposed. With both their full backs in Destiny Udogie & Pedro Porro really happy in getting forward, and with Forest generally protecting the middle of the field with their narrow shape, this allowed Spurs to regularly create 2 v 1s on either flank.
We see early in the game that Forest allow the centre backs to bring the ball out from the back in the intial phase, and this shape of having 4 players almost inside the centre circle, with Ndoye wide on the left to try to take Porro out of the build up, leaves Udogie in lots of space on the left. I found this a little frustrating, as when Forest would successfully force Spurs back, they would then press high up the field.
Udogie can then burst forward, play a ball in to Tel who drags Jair Cunha wide, and create an overload on the left flank that has the potential to become dangerous for Tottenham.
Only a few minutes later from a Spurs goal kick, Aina isn’t high on the right so the ball can go to Udogie out wide, leaving Ndoye to try and chase him back. He eventually succeeds in pulling him back and is probably fortunate not to get booked.
